Hero might not be the best description. What's the term for the character that's awesome and on the side of good, but your constantly thanking your fucking sparkly stars that he's on the side of good because otherwise you'd be completely fucked? He's that guy, with a good dose of dick.

Is it anti-hero? I think it's anti-hero.
